Preparing counselors to work in various |
(CACREP Accredited)
Doctoral study in Counselor Education & Supervision at Ohio University is designed to provide advanced level preparation for counselors in various public and private human services and mental health settings as well as prepare individuals to be counselor education professionals in colleges and universities. Preparing counselors to work in these positions is our highest priority. The program admits 10-15 students yearly for study toward the Ph.D. degree.
Students typically already possess a Master’s degree in Counseling or a closely related degree. They wish to improve their scholarly, instructional, clinical and research skills and to acquire advanced training and professional development. The doctoral program is based on the philosophy that each student enters with unique strengths and abilities and individual professional career goals; therefore, beyond the required courses, each student is expected to build a program based upon prior academic preparation, previous work experience, and future career expectations. The program is planned to help develop leaders in the field of counseling, and the goal is to train people who desire to have the professional identity of a counselor (Doctoral Handbook).
Doctoral graduates from this program become (1) college and university counselor education faculty members; (2) counselors, administrators, consultants, and trainers in mental health settings; or (3) practitioners in private practice.
Ohio University is making the transition from quarters to semesters, and the semester system will begin Fall Semester, 2012. All students should contact their advisor to review their program of studies, and the Transition Plan and the Semester Program of Studies Planning Document can be used to develop or revise a program of studies to insuret the completion of all requirements of the degree program.
