The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education offers both a master's and doctoral program in Educational Research and Evaluation (EDRE). The master's program in EDRE is intended to prepare graduates for more advanced study of quantitative methods and for roles in research organizations; the doctoral program in EDRE is intended to prepare graduates both for research and faculty positions and for leadership roles in research organizations. EDRE offers students courses in several areas: research design, measurement, test theory, survey design, statistical analysis, computer applications, Monte Carlo programming, evaluation, and qualitative research.

The student-faculty ratio is quite favorable, and there are usually opportunities for students to interact with faculty and to be involved with both new and ongoing research projects. Minimum course requirements allow students maximum flexibility to develop programs that meet their individual needs and interests. Students identify four core areas for their programs of study, which typically include one or two areas of specialization that comprise courses from across the University. In particular, students often take courses in mathematics, psychology, biostatistics, computer science, higher education, and within various specializations of teacher education.

Our students typically come from a variety of undergraduate and graduate majors including computer science, psychology, and mathematics as well as many fields of education. While there are no specific requirements, we seek students with a reasonable background in mathematics (calculus and linear algebra) or in an area closely related to mathematics. Statistical and/or computer skills are desirable.
