Graduate study and research in The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education bridge the gap between theory and practice. They resolve the differences that separate research from the realities of everyday experience in school, community and human service settings. Students, teachers, counselors, curriculum specialists, administrators, and other professionals in related fields take advantage of the concepts and findings generated in our graduate programs.

Internships and field-based clinical experiences connect with campus-based scholarship and research programs to form extended, interactive learning communities. Teacher Education's Early Childhood Generalist Endorsement Program - The program has been designed to meet the needs of licensed/certified teachers seeking an endorsement in addition to their teaching degree. The program, which consists of 4, completely online required courses, places equal and integrated emphasis on three factors: Ohio Academic Content Standard for grades 4-5; Pedagogy and Methods appropriate for students in grades 4-5, and a deep understanding of Child/Adolescent development. Residency Requirements
Residency requirements for advanced degree students are the same as for all graduate students at Ohio University. Doctoral programs require a three-quarter continuous sequence of full-time enrollment on the Athens campus, and the degree program can typically be completed within three years. Master’s students, like doctoral students, may attend full time or part time. Students who enroll in master’s programs full time may be able to complete their programs within four academic quarters. Part-time students are required to finish the master’s program within six calendar years.

Financial Aid, Scholarships and Graduate Appointments
Graduate students are eligible to apply for financial aid, scholarships, graduate appointments and/or student loans to help defray the costs of tuition and living expenses while enrolled in a graduate program. Requirements, criteria and qualifications for award vary widely, depending on the source of funding and the type of award. Graduate students are encouraged to learn more about financial aid opportunities available to all students by visiting the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships, 020 Chubb Hall, or at the Office of Graduate Student Services, McKee House. Applicants or students who choose to register with the Office of Financial Aids will be assigned a Financial Aid Advisor, who can assist with locating the range of financial aids opportunities. The Financial Aid Advisor will also provide advice about applications and the conditions, responsibilities and limits of various awards opportunities.

Within The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education, a small number of named scholarships are awarded to graduate students each year. Students do not typically “apply” for these scholarships. Rather, a committee of faculty members is convened to select scholarship recipients in line with specific criteria for each award. Additional information may be obtained by contacting Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.

Graduate Appointments, including Graduate Assistantships (GAs), Teaching Assistantships (TAs), Teaching Fellowships (TFs), and Technology Lab Assistantships (CTC-GAs), are awarded each year by Departments and other units in The Patton College. In addition, The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education faculty who have been awarded grant funding are sometimes able to offer graduate appointments in exchange for assistance in grant-funded activity. Graduate Appointments typically provide the graduate student with a waiver of instructional fees and a cash stipend in exchange for a service obligation of not more than 20 hours per week. Criteria for selection of graduate students to receive Graduate Appointments are outlined in policy documents published by each Department or unit awarding the Graduate Appointment. Application deadlines in some departments are as early as January in the year preceding the Graduate Appointment. Application forms are available at McCracken Lobby Desk, McCracken Hall.   • Department of Counseling and Higher Education Policy and Guidelines for Graduate Associateships and/or Scholarships, Counselor Education (for new or continuing graduate students in Counselor Education).
  • Department of Counseling and Higher Education Policy and Guidelines for Graduate Associateships and/or Scholarships, Higher Education/College Student Personnel (for new and continuing students in Higher Education/College Student Personnel).
  • Department of Educational Studies Policy for Awarding Associateships (with Tuition Scholarships) and Application Forms (for new applicants and continuing students).
  • Department of Teacher Education Policy for Awarding Associateships/Tuition Scholarship to Graduate Students (for new applicants or continuing students a who have not held a graduate appointment in the Department in prior year).
  • Department of Teacher Education Graduate Financial Aid Reapplication (for continuing students who currently hold a Graduate Appointment in Department of Teacher Education).
