Family and Consumer Sciences

About the Program
(Major code BS6370)

The major in family and consumer sciences education (FCS) is offered in the Department of Human and Consumer Sciences Education in The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education. Students completing this program fulfill the requirements for a teaching license in family and consumer sciences education, to teach in grades 4-12.

Career Opportunities

FCS Education majors gain in-depth knowledge in child and family studies with specialized course work in nutrition and food science, consumer and financial literacy, textiles and apparel, interior environments, and career planning.

A graduate might teach courses in nutrition & health, food safety, child care, parenting, building personal, family and career relationships, consumer and financial literacy, and/or transitions for academic and career success. In some school settings, a graduate might teach clothing or textile arts, interior design and other life and career skills.

FCS teacher candidates are prepared to coordinate GRADS, Ohio's in-school teen pregnancy program, leadership development through the FCCLA student's organization, provide community leadership through in-class service learning, and career internship/mentorship programs or foundation classes for related career academies.

Expectations of Transfer Students

Undecided or declared FCS Education majors should begin their studies with HCGE 110 Community and Workforce Education.

Field Experiences and Internships

EDTE 2020 Field Experience in Education - observation, assistance, adapting tests and lessons and tutoring.

EDSE 3500 Secondary School Teaching and Instruction - Clinical experiences in a secondary school classroom.

CONS 3400: Family and Consumer Sciences Education

Distance Learning
