The program is completely online. There are two options for completing the program. Teachers may take all four classes in the summer or take one course in the summer and the other three courses during the school year.

The program begins on May 13th so interested teachers must apply right away. Inquiries about the program should be directed to reading@ohio.edu

A reading intervention teacher is a reading specialist who provides intensive instruction to struggling readers.  Such instruction may be provided within or outside of the students’ classrooms.

A reading coach or literacy coach is a reading specialist who focuses on providing professional development for teachers. They provide essential leadership for the school’s entire literacy program by helping to create and supervise a long-term staff development process that supports both the development and implementation of the literacy program over months and years.  These individuals need to have experiences that enable them to provide effective professional development for the teachers in their schools.

A reading supervisor or reading coordinator is a reading specialist who is responsible for developing, leading, and evaluating a school’s reading program, from Kindergarten through grade 12.  They may assume some of the same responsibilities as the literacy coach, but also have responsibilities that require them to work on systematic change at the school level.  These individuals need to have experiences that enable them to work effectively as administrators and to be able to develop and lead effective professional development programs.

Requirements:

  • Applications (including transcripts) are due by May 10th, 2013 (Click the 'Apply Now!' link in the menu to right)

The program includes four courses totaling 12 quarter hours of graduate-level credit.*
  • Summer semester: EDTE 5200
  • Fall semester: EDTE 5220 and EDTE 5260
  • Spring semester: EDTE 5230

*All courses are transferrable to the Master’s in Reading program at Ohio University. The Master's degree is projected to be offered online soon after the Reading Endorsement ends.

Field Work

Candidates are expected to participate in supervised tutoring of children during three of the four courses.  She/he will work with a child from three different age groups:  Early Childhood, Middle Childhood, and Adolescent-to-Young Adult.  Candidates may work with a child from his/her classroom or from a different classroom within the school or district in which she/he is teaching.  If the candidate is not currently teaching, he/she will need to be able to find a child to work with for each of the three courses requiring tutoring.

Coaching is also a strong component of the program.  Candidates will be required to gain experience working with other teachers to conduct professional development.  These coaching experiences can involve a variety of experiences from meeting with teachers to discuss the literacy needs within their school, conducting professional study groups with a small group of teachers, demonstrating new strategies for different teachers, helping with the assessment and planning for students in a colleague’s classroom, analyzing the literacy program and needs of a specific grade level, and/or planning and conducting a set of professional development sessions for a group of teachers.
