Department of Teacher Education

All College of Education undergraduate programs lead to initial teacher licensure in the State of Ohio and are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Ohio Department of Education. Our undergraduate programs align to both national Specialized Professional Association Standards as well as the Ohio Standards for the Teaching Profession. In the Report of the Quality of Teacher Preparation in Ohio, issued annually by the Ohio Department of Education, Ohio University has consistently been rated as effective.

For those interested in teaching in preschool (age 3) to grade 3, Early Childhood is a program option. For those interested in teaching two content areas in grade 4 through grade 9, Middle Childhood programs are available (Specializations: Language Arts & Mathematics, Language Arts & Science, Language Arts & Social Studies, Mathematics & Science, Mathematics & Social Studies, Science & Social Studies). For those interested in teaching one content area in grade 7 through grade 12, Adolescent-to-Young Adult programs are available (Specializations: Earth Science, Integrated Language Arts, Integrated Mathematics, Integrated Science, Integrated Social Studies, Life Science, Physical Science). For those interested in teaching learners with special needs in Kindergarten through grade 12, Special Education/Intervention Specialist programs are available (Specializations: Mild to Moderate Educational Needs; Moderate to Intensive Educational Needs). For those interested in teaching arts, music, physical education, or modern language in preschool (age 3) through grade 12, Multi-age programs are available (Specializations: French Education, German Education, Spanish Education). Additionally a non-degree reading endorsement is available at the undergraduate level.

Progressing in Teacher Preparation Programs
It is possible to complete our undergraduate programs in four years. However, to progress through our programs as expected, students must meet performance standards. Decisions about a student's advancement through a teacher preparation program at Ohio University, regardless of college enrollment or campus attended, are based on multiple assessments. Decisions are made at various points, including admission to the University, "admission to Professional Education," "admission to Advanced Standing," "admission to professional internship," and at program completion. To be eligible for either a university or college scholarship, students must apply through the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarship (see information above).
