Upward Bound Scholar Athlete Award (UBSAA) :

Eligibility Criteria

The UBSAA is a one-time awarded scholarship of the value of $1,000. This scholarship is non-renewable.

  • High school senior graduating from OHIO’s Upward Bound program and accepted to Ohio University
  • Full-time, undergraduate student attending the Athens Campus
  • Student with demonstrated financial need and academic talent, as determined by the Upward Bound program requirements as follows:
    • First generation college student
    • Student with financial need
    • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better
    • ACT score of 21 or higher
    • Consistent participation in Upward Bound activities, events, and advising during the academic year and summer residential components
    • A minimum of 24 hours of community service (which can be obtained through consistent participation in Upward Bound)
  • Previous involvement in athletic extracurricular activities associated with the local school system, intramural league, or community-based organization is mandatory. Eligible participation should be substantive (i.e. season-long), dependent on the type of activity.

Selection Procedure and Criteria

The Upward Bound Advisory Board (UBAB) will serve as the selection committee. Recipients will be chosen principally on the content of the following:

  • Application
  • Personal statement, as directed by the selection committee
  • Two letters of recommendation
    • One from a High School Administrator/Faculty member
    • Second from a Community Professional
  • A “Senior File” (as required for all Upward Bound students) complete with the following information submitted to the office:
    • Copy of ACT/SAT score(s)
    • Copies of all acceptance letters from colleges and universities applied to
    • Copies of financial aid awards and scholarship letters received
    • Copy of grades which include your current cumulative GPA

To apply for the UBSAA, please complete and return the application form below. Completed applications can be emailed to OUUB at upwardbound@ohio.edu or returned to the OUUB office.

UBSAA Recipient 2011

In the Fall of 2011, Miller HighSchool graduate Kellan Gamble was the 2nd UB student to receive the Dr. Ray Skinner and Marilyn L. Skinner Upward Bound Scholar Athlete Award (UBSAA). Kellan became a part of the Upward Bound program in 2008. She is now pursuing a degree in Photojournalism at Ohio University's Zanesville campus.
