Current Morton Professor

The Robert L. Morton Professorship of Mathematics Education is an endowed chair established by Dr. Morton, an Ohio University alumnus who returned after doctoral studies elsewhere to have a long and illustrious career at the university. Gregory D. Foley serves as Ohio University’s third Morton Chair, following Leonard Pikaart (1974–1992) and James Schultz (1994–2005). Like his two predecessors and Dr. Morton himself, Professor Foley has deep interests in both mathematics and mathematics education, has authored textbooks, has traveled widely, and has presented his ideas throughout the United States and internationally.

Linking Professional Development to Changes in Secondary Mathematics Teachers'
Instructional Practices

Abstract: The Enhancing Secondary Mathematics Teacher Preparation (ESP) Project engaged teachers in
professional learning experiences focused on the selection and implementation of cognitively challenging
mathematical tasks. In this talk, improvements in teachers' knowledge, selection, and implementation of
cognitively challenging tasks will be connected to their experiences and participation in the ESP workshop.

Dr. Boston presented a two-day workshop 21-22 September on Instructional Quality Assessment (IQA)
to train a group of faculty and doctoral students on the use of this research instrument.
