2004-2005 Academic Year News

Tom Davis appointed interim dean of Ohio University's The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education, effective July 1.

A total of 19 awards and scholarships will be handed out to 27 students, staff and alumni at the annual College of Education Recognition Luncheon set for May 23 in Baker Center.
Associate Professor Jerry Olsheski will take the reins of the Department of Counseling and Higher Education in July when he becomes chair.

As the academic year winds up, The Patton College recognizes several faculty members with promotion, tenure and fellowship honors.
 
Travis Glendenning, a senior majoring in adolescent/young adult education, has been selected as the state of Ohio's only James Madison Junior Fellow.

Dean James L. Heap announced earlier this month that he has accepted a position as dean of Faculty of Education at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario.
 
The success of federal TRIO programs, including Upward Bound, was celebrated during National TRIO Day events held in Athens.
 
A senior in the Integrated Social Studies Education program has been awarded a James Madison Fellowship to support graduate studies in American history.
 
Associate Professor William Smith will take the reins of the Department of Teacher Education next fall when he becomes chair.

Two Ohio University Education students have been awarded Fulbright teaching assistantships for the 2005-06 academic year.
 
Dennis J. Meade, superintendent of Minford Local School District, has been named the The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education 's 2004 Samuel I. Hicks Executive-in-Residence.
 
Dr. Mark Orbe, associate professor of communication and diversity at Western Michigan University, will present "First Generation College Students: Promoting Success in a Largely Invisible Student Population" on April 20 in McCracken Hall.

The The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education has hired a new accreditation coordinator, T.J. Luce, to oversee accreditation activities and requirements related to College programs.

The Educational Testing Service is seeking consolidation of lawsuits by teacher candidates affected by grading errors on Praxis exams, lawyers involved in the case have announced.
 
The Rehabilitation Counseling Program has been awarded accreditation for eight more years by the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE).
 
Dr. Judith Kleinfeld is the featured presenter at a daylong faculty forum on teaching cases.
 
Education should be at the top of the national agenda despite the current political climate, says Richard. W. Riley, former secretary of education, during remarks given at the Education Lecture Series held in Athens last week.

2003-2004 Academic Year News

Noted multicultural education researcher to speak at third annual Education Lecture Series.  
Sandra Turner, professor of Educational Studies, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture and do research at University of Winneba, Ghana.  
Doctoral Student Tiece Ruffin has been appointed as a Martin Luther King Jr. Scholar with the U.S. Department of Education, one of 10 positions awarded nationwide.  
Outstanding staff and students in The Patton College will receive awards and scholarships during the annual recognition luncheon on May 23.  
The second annual The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education Research Conference is slated for May 16 in McCracken Hall. This year's theme is "Enhancing Our Learning and Community Through Research."  
Mrs. Hope Taft, first lady of Ohio, will visit Chauncey Elementary School on May 9 to observe tutoring sessions between Ohio University teacher education students in the Chauncey Literacy Partnership and the elementary students they tutor.
