ATHENS, Ohio (June 20, 2009) - Local science and mathematics instructors joined some intervention specialists this week as part of a course to help improve students' performances on state testing.

Steubenville High School was the site for the Mathematics and Science Coordination Teams that gathered to share information on what areas students need improvement and what techniques are working.

New scholarship rewards those who Choose Appalachian Teaching

ATHENS, Ohio (May 31, 2009) - Ohio University's The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education now is taking applications for a new online program designed to enable licensed/certified early childhood teachers to obtain a teaching endorsement for grades four and five. The first classes in the program - all of which earn graduate credit - begin in June, and the five-course program can be completed by the end of November.

ATHENS, Ohio (May 28, 2009) – Four The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education (coe) students were among the 42 students recognized by their peers, faculty, staff, administrators and alumni at the 26th annual Leadership Awards Gala May 20.  The gala, which recognized excellence in student leadership, was presented by the Division of Student Affairs with support from the Ohio University Foundation and the Ohio University Alumni Association.

Program adds 4th, 5th grade curriculums

ATHENS, Ohio (May 26, 2009) - Ohio University's The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education will offer its first online endorsement program for certified kindergarten-through-third-grade teachers looking to expand their curriculums to fourth and fifth grade students.

The school hopes the program will help students find jobs in the uniquely structured Ohio school system, said Linda Rice, OU's associate dean for outreach and undergraduate studies.

Rural Urban Collaborative recognizes student success

ATHENS, Ohio (May 18, 2009) - The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education recognized the most recent participants in a new initiative The Patton College has taken in order to enhance diversity in teaching, the Rural Urban Collaborative. 

As an initiative among Ohio University, The Ohio State University, Columbus City Schools, and collaborating schools across Appalachia, the Rural Urban Collaborative places pre-service teachers in rural and urban field experiences.

ATHENS, Ohio (May 15, 2009) - Dr. John Stanford, the executive assistant for education policy to Governor Strickland, addressed The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education (coe) faculty and students regarding education policy and school funding reform.

Prior to his arrival at McCracken Hall on April 28, Dr. Stanford attended a program at the Ohio University Inn sponsored by the Coalition of Rural and Appalachian Schools (CORAS), during which he was honored as the 2009 Samuel I. Hicks Executive-in-Residence.

Johnson discusses Title I grants

ATHENS, Ohio (May 15, 2009) - Dr. Jerry Johnson addressed The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education (coe) faculty and students in a Faculty/Student Research forum held April 24 in McCracken Hall.  His research, entitled “District Size Bias in the Distribution of Targeted and EFIG Title I Grants: A Critical Policy Analysis” attempts to describe funding policies and explore the way those policies impact rural schools and communities in the United States.

Tim Wise, 'White Privilege'

ATHENS (May 14, 2009) - Templteton Blackburn Memorial Auditorium was packed the evening renowned antiracist author and educator Tim Wise came to campus. Students, faculty and staff of all ages, races and religions gathered to hear what Brian Bridges, the Vice Provost for Diversity, called "an engaging, insightful, occasionally humorous and powerful talk."

ATHENS, Ohio (May 14, 2009) - Eight The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education (coe) students were recognized with awards at the 2009 Student Research and Creativity Expo.  With more than 600 undergraduate, graduate, medical and postdoctoral students participating in the event, this year’s expo broke previous attendance records.

New faculty member's research mentioned on Inside Higher Ed   

ATHENS, Ohio (May 12, 2009) - Dr. David Horton Jr., a faculty member new to The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education, recently had his research discussed in an article on Inside Higher Ed. The online source of news and opinion published "Making the Grade, Missing the Goal," an article about a study examining community college athletes, grades and graduation rates.

Dr. Horton, who recently received his Ph.D. from the University of Florida, is a former community college athlete who wrote his dissertation on the academic performance of such athletes.

Morgan County students come to OHIO

ATHENS, Ohio (May 11, 2009) - The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education welcomed students, teachers and parents from Morgan County’s South Middle and Elementary Schools for the third annual McCracken Art Unveiling and Exhibition. This November, the students’ artwork will be part of a silent auction at McCracken Hall, which will raise money for both the students and their art program.

Dr. Ward Randolph discusses old legacies, new leaders and her research experiences

ATHENS, Ohio (May 8, 2009) - Dr. Adah Ward Randolph presented the final student/faculty research forum of the year.  Her presentation was entitled “Developing Your Research Garden: Reaping What You Sow.” As an associate professor in educational studies, Dr. Ward Randolph compared conducting research to growing a garden during the forum. Her discussion focused on her research experiences and offered advice for success.

ATHENS, Ohio (May 8, 2009) - John Henning, an educator with more than 30 years of experience in teaching and teacher education, has been appointed chair of The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education 's Department of Teacher Education. Henning will assume his new responsibilities on July 1, 2009.

The Post: "Teachers' retirement creates hope for jobs"

ATHENS, Ohio (Apr. 28, 2009) - Michelle McIntyre has wanted to be a teacher for her entire life, but thought her dream might be threatened by the job market.

"I was definitely always worried," said McIntyre, an Ohio University sophomore studying middle childhood education. "My parents and grandparents are always saying, 'Michelle, you shouldn't be going into education, there's no jobs.'"

But a new report done by the National Commission on Teaching and America's Future, a nonprofit research advocacy group, states that during the next four years, one-third of all teachers could retire, and one out of three will leave the profession within five years - meaning more job openings for current education students like McIntyre, but also a shortage in experienced teachers in the classroom.

Dr. Arthur Stellar returns to The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education for the McCracken Education Lecture Series:
The Transformation of Education

ATHENS, Ohio (April 20, 2009) - Arthur Stellar is known in The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education as the epitome of a change agent. In the past, Stellar has assumed almost every role there is in a school system, from school bus driver to sports team coach to his current role in administration. While superintendent of Oklahoma Public Schools, Stellar led the district from 32 at-risk schools to only three in a matter of seven years. Since assuming his current role, superintendent of Taunton Public Schools in Massachusetts, the dropout rate has changed from 6.8% to 4.7% last year.

ATHENS, Ohio (Apr. 17, 2009) - As a professor of psychology and education in the Teacher’s College at Columbia University, W. Warner Burke spoke of his experiences and offered advice to faculty and graduate students in an address to the Ohio University Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education.  Burke visited OHIO as an affiliate of the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs.

Soup and Substance II

ATHENS, Ohio (Apr. 16, 2009) - Students, faculty and staff gathered in McCracken to take part in Soup and Substance II, the second event in a series hosted by the Dean’s Advisory Committee on Diversity.

The first Soup and Substance event, held in January, consisted of dialogue between a panel and those in attendance about the election of President Obama.  The second Soup and Substance consisted of another panel in which post-inaugural thoughts about the president’s education policies were shared.

ATHENS, Ohio (Apr. 10, 2009) - While pursuing her doctorate in Cultural Studies in Education, Catherine (Cat) Cutcher has engaged in experiences and amassed a wealth of knowledge that made her an optimal presenter at a College of Education (coe) Faculty/Student Research Forum.  The first student to do so, Cutcher’s research forum on April 10 focused on “Popular Education and Development among Women’s Organizations in Kenya.”

Kappa Delta Pi Initiation Ceremony

ATHENS, Ohio (April 5, 2009) - Congratulations to the new members of Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education, who were officially initiated during a ceremony held in Baker Ballroom.

Students and their families were invited to celebrate with Dean Renée A. Middleton, Chapter Counselor Dr. JoAnn Dugan and the executive board of Kappa Delta Pi, as new members were inaugurated and old members said goodbye.

“I think high-fives are the No. 1 way of rewarding our kids,” Kallenberg said. “We give them thumbs up and pats on the back, too. These guys thrive on it.”

National TRiO Day Celebration

ATHENS, Ohio (Mar. 30, 2009) - Upward Bound staff, students and their families came together to celebrate the legacy of TRiO programs and what students have decided to accomplish by participating in the Upward Bound program.

According to a congressional resolution, “National TRiO Day is a day on which the nation is asked to turn its attention to the needs of disadvantaged young people and adults aspiring to improve their lives, to the investment necessary if they are to become contributing citizens of this country, and to the talent which will be wasted if that investment is not made.”

Education initiative earns $1 million: collaboration receives funding under Choose Ohio First

ATHENS, Ohio (Mar. 17, 2009) - An Ohio University-led proposal aimed at recruiting and graduating science and math teachers in the Appalachian area is among 11 projects to receive funding in the second year of the Choose Ohio First Scholarship Program. This is the final year of the two-year, $100 million investment intended to strengthen Ohio's economy.

The Ohio Board of Regents allocated $1 million toward the project, Choose Appalachian Teaching: Building a Community of Mathematics and Science Teachers for Southeastern Ohio. Under the leadership of Ohio University, the project partners with Shawnee State University, Rio Grande University, Marietta College, Muskingum College and the five Ohio University regional campuses -- a consortium known as the South East Ohio Teacher Development Collaborative (SEOTDC). Currently, SEOTDC institutions prepare more than 75 percent of the mathematics and science teachers in Southeast Ohio.

The event, held in McCracken Hall, was sponsored by the Appalachian Reading Council in partnership with Athens Public Libraries, The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education, and the Edward Stevens Center for the Study and Development of Literacy and Language.

Helping teachers teach;
The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education grants to foster
professional development

ATHENS, Ohio (Mar. 10, 2009) - Two The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education projects that provide professional development to teachers in school districts in Southeastern Ohio have received combined grants of more than $270,000 from the Ohio Board of Regents.

The funding comes from the federal Improving Teacher Quality State Grants program and is administered by the state board. Awards under this program support partnerships between higher education institutions and "high-needs" school districts.

OUCTM Member Sarah Russell Wins Prospective Teacher NCTM Conference Attendance Award

ATHENS, Ohio (Feb. 20, 2009) - It was only a year ago that Sarah Russell, accompanied by five fellow OUCTM members, attended the 2008 National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Annual Meeting and Exposition in Salt Lake City. This year Russell will be able to attend the conference without any financial worries thanks to the Prospective Teacher NCTM Conference Attendance Award which will help her fund her trip.

Francis Godwyll: Groping in the Dark; Doing Research without Preparation

ATHENS, Ohio (Feb. 13, 2009) - “The idea of research is processing beyond your radar,” said Francis Godwyll, Ph.D., “you must look again, and again, and a third time.” Godwyll is serious about the importance of researching; he made that clear during the opening of his research forum. In addressing the problems with student research, as Godwyll did while working in Ghana, the problems sometimes stem from the illegitimate training of the researcher, “What happens when students don’t have the skills, don’t have the knowledge?”

ATHENS, Ohio (Feb. 6, 2009) - Dr. John Hitchcock, a new professor in The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education, shared his mixed methods voice with faculty, staff and students during his student/faculty research forum.

Hitchcock introduced the focus of his forum: a team of researchers were asked to investigate the mental health of youth in Sri Lanka. Possibly because of a limited access to mental health services and limited professional health, these youth had an unusually high suicide rate. Researchers wanted to see if they could positively impact mental health services in the country by taking a closer look at Sri Lankan culture and developing a series of assessments and intervention techniques.

Christine Bhat: The Responsive Classroom Approach

ATHENS, Ohio (Jan. 30, 2009) - Students and faculty gathered in McCracken Hall to hear Dr. Christine Suniti Bhat, an assistant professor at Ohio University, and Patsy Barrington, a school counselor for the Athens City Schools, present their research on the Responsive Classroom Approach (RCA).  Dr. Bhat exlplained that RCA emphasizes social, emotional and academic growth in a strong and safe school community.  She went on to say that the approach, developed by teachers, is aimed at enabling optimal student learning.

Linda J. Rice: Active
Learning in Theory and Practice

ATHENS, Ohio (Jan. 23, 2009) - Dr. Linda J. Rice opened her Faculty and Student Research Forum by asking PCOE students, faculty and staff to write down one memory of a great experience in the classroom.  She then directed the audience members to share the experience with their neighbors and explain what made the incident memorable. As audience members discussed their classroom experiences, it became clear that they all had something in common.

Library Database Workshop

ATHENS, Ohio (January 23, 2009) - The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education graduate students gathered in McCracken Hall for a Library Database Workshop.  The goal of the workshop was to inform students or faculty who may be writing a dissertation, thesis, term paper or literature review about the resources available through Alden Library.

Soup and Substance

ATHENS, Ohio (Jan. 14, 2009) - The Dean’s Advisory Committee on Diversity held their first quarterly Soup and Substance forum. Faculty, staff and students filtered into a McCracken classroom to hear a panel of faculty, staff, students and community members share their thoughts and opinions about the recent election of president-elect Barack Obama.

PCOE Student Organization SECO Attends Conference in Dallas

DALLAS, Texas (January 7, 2009) - With the help of The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education, The Patton College of Health and Human Services and intensive fundraising, twelve members of SECO, the Student Early Childhood Organization, recently attended an NAEYC conference in Dallas, Texas.

The National Association of Education for Young Children, or NAEYC, holds a conference each year and welcomes college students who are planning on working with young children after graduation.

The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education Mourns Loss of Doctoral Student Albert K. Adusah

ATHENS, Ohio (Dec. 27, 2008) - The Ohio University community is mourned the loss of The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education doctoral student Albert Karikari Adusah, who died unexpectedly in Brown Hall on Saturday, Dec. 27. The native of Kumasi, Ghana, lived in the residence hall with his two daughters and wife, Augustina Adusah-Karikari, a residential coordinator on South Green.

Students showcase research at 200 Block Research Expo

ATHENS, Ohio (Nov. 17, 2008) - The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education hosted the 200 Block Research Expo on Friday.  Colorful trifolds and enthusiastic students filled Nelson Commons, eager to present their research and findings. 

The 200 Block consists of three PCOE courses that allow education majors to learn theoretical bases that can be applied to teaching and research experiences.  Students worked in groups of two or three to formulate a research topic, conduct research and present findings.

coe Hosts Second Annual Art Extravaganza and Silent Auction

ATHENS, Ohio (November 13, 2008) - Miller High School students were recently featured at Ohio University’s The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education' second annual Art Extravaganza and Silent Auction. McCracken Hall transformed into an art gallery, showcasing photography pieces the students had created in their art class. The art show brought many visitors, including students and their families, faculty, staff and community members, and resulted in a generous donation to the art program and its students.

Faculty and Student Research Forum and Luncheon

ATHENS, Ohio (Nov. 12, 2008) - The forum featured Dr. Steve Safran, a professor in the Department of Teacher Education. The topic of the forum and of his presentation was “Evidenced-based Practice: Raising the Bar in Education?” 

Safran’s presentation aimed to enhance awareness of evidence-based practice, help faculty understand the importance of combining empirical evidence and practitioner wisdom and analyze issues related to evidence-based practice.

ATHENS, Ohio (Oct. 31, 2008) - Faculty, students, teachers and administrators from Ohio University, The Ohio State University, Columbus City Schools, Logan-Hocking Middle School and Southern Local Schools come together to prepare future teachers to teach in any environment.

The Collaborative also helps students to foster a deeper awareness of how to examine, understand and assess a variety of cultural experiences and issues.

Read for the Record Campaign

ATHENS, Ohio (October 2, 2008) - Volunteers from the Edward Stevens Center for the Study and Development of Literacy and Language were honored to take part in the Jumpstart, Read for the Record Campaign. 

Read for the Record, which took place on October 2, 2008, was designed by Jumpstart to encourage hundreds of thousands of children and adults from across the country to read the same book on the same day in an effort to set another Guinness World Record.

Craig Leon Assists at Olympic trials

EUGENE, Ore. (Sep. 17, 2008) - Leon's former supervisor in The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education, Kelly Davidson, recalls early morning meetings for which Leon, a Precollege adviser at the time, would arrive at 8 a.m. and dance around the room. Incoming students appreciated his easygoing nature.

"Craig is focused, an outstanding student and all-around person," Davidson said. "The key to his success is his ability to balance athletics, academics and fun."

Leona Hughes

SARASOTA, Fla. (July 25, 2008) - Leona Hughes’, who graduated from the PCOE in 1930, died Thursday in Sarasota, FL at the age of 99. One of Ohio University’s most dedicated supporters, Hughes’ spent more than eight decades making a great impact on her alma mater, earning many of its most distinguished honors.

“There have been a lot of emotional things that keep me coming back to Ohio University,” Hughes said in 2002.

The Better Mathematics Through Literacy Summer Institute a Success

ATHENS, Ohio (July 22, 2008) - Elementary teachers from nearby counties spent a week perfecting their math and literature teaching skills with help from PCOE faculty and staff.

 “After the week of professional development, the teachers were able to walk away with a clear picture of how to bridge the two seemingly separate worlds of language and mathematics,” said Tim McKeny, one of the instructors for the seminar.

ATHENS, Ohio (July 9, 2008) - Catherine Cutcher, a doctoral student in Ohio University’s coe, who received the prestigious 2008-09 American Association of University Women (AAUW) Dissertation Fellowship returned from Kenya for two weeks, after enduring and learning from the ensuing election violence. “I think this year for me has been a journey of faith, trust and community, “ she said.
