2010 Hicks honoree to visit Ohio University
Charol Shakesaft will deliver a keynote address
ATHENS, Ohio (April 13, 2010)—Dr. Charol Shakeshaft, professor and chair of the Department of Education Leadership at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, has been named as the Ohio University 2010 Samuel I. Hicks Executive-in-Residence, an honor that recognizes outstanding leaders in education. Dr. Shakeshaft will accept the Hicks award at the monthly meeting of the Coalition of Rural and Appalachian Schools (CORAS) on Tuesday, April 27. On Monday, April 26, Dr. Shakeshaft will deliver a keynote address for Ohio University students, faculty and staff discussing her recent research on educator sexual misconduct and her ongoing work with females in leadership roles. The lecture will take place at 9 a.m. in The Patton College of Education’s Curriculum and Technology Center, located in McCracken Hall, room 215. Light breakfast will be served during the event, which is open to all members of the campus community. Dr. Shakeshaft holds a Ph.D. and an M.S. from Texas A&M University and a B.S. from the University of Nebraska. Much of her training is in research methodology, and she has been studying equity in schools for more than 30 years. Her work is widely published and she has received numerous state and national awards. She has worked with the U.S. Department of Education on an analysis of the extent, consequences and possible remedies for educator sexual abuse of students. She has worked as the principal investigator for the National Science Foundation on various projects and grants, including a project to increase the achievement of low-income students of color in science and mathematics. Currently Dr. Shakeshaft has a $5.2 million grant to develop computer simulations to help prepare school leaders. The Samuel I. Hicks Executive-in-Residence program was established through The Ohio University Foundation in 1976 to honor Dr. Samuel I. Hicks, professor emeritus of educational administration at Ohio University. Hicks, who died in 1999, dedicated more than 75 years to teaching, research and educational administration. His extraordinary devotion, achievement and service on behalf of higher education reflect the spirit with which the Hicks Executive-in-Residence award is presented.
