Annual event awards success
Education students recognized for their leadership at the yearly gala
ATHENS, Ohio (May 20, 2010) - College of Education student leaders were recognized for their contributions to Ohio University at the 27th Annual Leadership and Awards Gala on May 19. The Division of Student Affairs sponsors the annual gala to recognize the outstanding work of individuals and student organizations on OHIO’ campus. OHIO alumna Melanie Sablehaus delivered the evening’s keynote address. Sabelhaus, who has more than 25 years of experience in the small business, corporate and federal government sectors, discussed the ways in which her life experiences have taught her lessons about being a leader. She reflected on her past experiences, including her education at OHIO. “An OU education can help you transform a life and change this world,” she said. Sabelhaus founded her own company and went on to serve as Deputy Administrator for the U.S. Small Business Association during George W. Bush’s tenure as president. She is also an active community member who has devoted years of her “time, talent and treasure” to community fundraising and women’s business issues.
Sabelhaus left those in attendance with these lessons to prepare them for success as leaders in the 21st century: Seize the day, be an entrepreneurial leader, manage by objectives and find something you’re passionate about. “True leaders are those who see the possibilities before they become apparent to others,” she said. President Roderick McDavis also took a moment to thank the Division of Student Affairs for hosting the gala and expressed how much he enjoys honoring student leaders because of what they contribute to Ohio University. “As someone who witnesses and listens to you and sees you engaged on campus, you are making a difference,” he told the student leaders. College of Education students Amaris Ifedi and Brianna Pickett were recipients of Blackburn/Spencer scholarships and awards, which are based on merit and financial need. The awards honor the legacy of the first African-American female graduate of Ohio University and the first African American to serve as Chair of the Ohio University Board of Trustees. Katie Kostohryz was also recognized as a finalist for the Outstanding Graduate Student Leadership Award. Joseph Stitt, a junior majoring in Adolescent-to-Young Adult Earth Science Education, was selected as a finalist for the Edwin L. Kennedy Leadership Award for outstanding community service, which recognizes students who share in Edwin L. Kennedy’s vision and commitment to volunteerism. Stitt was also one of the recipients of the Pepsi Ohio University Campus Leadership Scholarships, which earns him the chance to participate in the week-long LeaderShape Institute. Sponsored by Pepsi, these scholarships are designed to recognize and enhance student leadership in the university community. “I'm incredibly honored to win the award,” he said. “I know several of the other winners, and it is an honor to be considered in a group with them.” The College of Education takes great pride in the success of its student leaders who were recognized at the event and looks forward to supporting these students as they continue to pursue their goals.
