“As our very first Cutler Scholar, Rachel embodies the leadership skills we look for in aspiring teacher-leaders, and we hope that other high school students look to her as an example,” said The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education Dean Renée Middleton. “We are extremely excited about her arrival and the many contributions she will make to The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education during her undergraduate career.”
Ackerman will join 34 other Cutler Scholars who will attend classes on the Athens campus this fall. Students selected for the Cutler Scholars Program must excel in the classroom and at extracurricular activities. A student also must show evidence of personal integrity, a breadth of involvement and achievement, physical stamina and the ability to lead and encourage others.
Beatrice Gibby earned her B.S. in education from Ohio University in 1940 and enjoyed a long and varied career. From 1968-1980 she accompanied her husband, Morris Gibby, to Rome, Lisbon and London, where he served as a State Department Foreign Service Officer. Mrs. Gibby passed away in 2005 and the initial Gibby-Cutler Scholar award was established through an estate gift provision. Designated for exceptional freshmen enrolled in Ohio University’s The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education, this is the first year the award has been given.
