The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education Captures 4 Wins
at 2008 Research and Creativity Fair
The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education was elated when four of its students won prizes at this past year’s seventh annual Research and Creative Activity Expo.
Akyeampong

Ohio University's new vice president for research Rathinda Bose and interim vice president for research James Rankin applaud Albert Akyeampong for a first place win in Education Session 1.

“It feels great to win first prize. Sharing my research with professors and students from different programs and departments was a very exciting experience,” said Akyeampong of his win. His project, “The Relationship of Technology Use to Perception of Instructional Ability,” examined whether or not the use of different forms of technology can predict instructor quality, and which predictors are most successful.

Using Synchronous Communicative Systems
for Spoken English Teaching and Learning."

“The school children really impressed me with their curiosity and interest in the research. This was a wonderful experience and certainly a good platform to showcase my research and practice my presentation skills. OU student presenters came from different parts of the world, giving the fair an international flavor. It is one annual event worth attending,” said Akyeampong.

Tim McKeny

Attendees were able to experiment with some
interactive projects.

Tess Leyser’s research team was made up of The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education students Katie Bailey, Cherish Odom, Brittany Begg, and Hannah Bierlein. Their work, “Attending to Student’s Needs in a Linguistically Diverse Classroom,” focused on the influence of English as a Second Language (ESL) students’ self-efficacy, primary language and parent’s involvement. They also looked at strategies to assist ESP students’ challenges with reading and practical classroom applications.

Students

Students were able to comment on projects at the fair.

At this year’s fair, a record 550 students showcased research projects to over 80 judges. Of those students, 85 were awarded a first place prize of $300 or $100 for second place prize, based on creativity, presentation skills, professionalism, and research methods.
