“It feels great to win first prize. Sharing my research with professors and students from different programs and departments was a very exciting experience,” said Akyeampong of his win. His project, “The Relationship of Technology Use to Perception of Instructional Ability,” examined whether or not the use of different forms of technology can predict instructor quality, and which predictors are most successful.

“The school children really impressed me with their curiosity and interest in the research. This was a wonderful experience and certainly a good platform to showcase my research and practice my presentation skills. OU student presenters came from different parts of the world, giving the fair an international flavor. It is one annual event worth attending,” said Akyeampong.

In Education Session 1, Akyeampong took home first prize and Tess Leyser took home second. In Education Session 2, Janine El-Amin and Cheun-Yeong Lee tied for first place for El-Amin’s “Teacher Satisfaction in Urban and Suburban Schools: What can be done?” and Lee’s “Innovatively Using Synchronous Communicative Systems for Spoken English Teaching and Learning.”

Tess Leyser’s research team was made up of The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education students Katie Bailey, Cherish Odom, Brittany Begg, and Hannah Bierlein. Their work, “Attending to Student’s Needs in a Linguistically Diverse Classroom,” focused on the influence of English as a Second Language (ESL) students’ self-efficacy, primary language and parent’s involvement. They also looked at strategies to assist ESP students’ challenges with reading and practical classroom applications.

At this year’s fair, a record 550 students showcased research projects to over 80 judges. Of those students, 85 were awarded a first place prize of $300 or $100 for second place prize, based on creativity, presentation skills, professionalism, and research methods.
